As well as being a stunning scenic image, the Banff team chose this photograph to represent the festival because it exudes energy through movement in the clouds, dramatic light and grand mountain peaks.

“I try to show emotion in my photographs, moments of turbulent weather mixed with awe-inspiring action, something magical, dreamlike or even fictional,” says photographer Soren Rickards, who was just 20 when he took the shot. “I feel like I am living in a dream and I want to show that emotion in my photographs.”

About the photographer: Soren Rickards grew up in the suburbs of London, but at 17 wanted to expand his horizons. He moved to the French Alps, fell in love with the mountains and photography, and lived in a van for two years doing odd jobs to allow him to work on his new passion. Soren now captures some of the most extreme sports and beautiful landscapes on the planet.
